                    Picture
Karla Romero recognizes that the kind of warfare we face is new in history and she will be an independent thinker in these times that try us.  We must work efficiently and lawfully to defend ourselves at home so that people feel safe to conduct their lives freely and so that businesses can function with confidence.  Abroad we must work with our allies when it is practical, and we must act independently when the circumstances require.

                    Security At Home

Reforming Our Immigration Process.   Karla Romero supports legal immigration, and will work with the citizens of our great nation to develop comprehensive immigration reform. When people abuse the immigration process, it harms all who come to our homeland.

Make the crisis of child sexual abuse a national priority
Recognizing that: - 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 7 boys will be sexually abused by age 18 - Victims suffer increased risk for mental illness, suicide, criminal behavior, promiscuity, STDs, teen pregnancy, truancy - 1/3 of all cases go unreported - Less than 3%. Karla's home state of MA ranks #1 in the country for child abuse and neglect. Karla is a foster parent to severly abuse kids. Karla fights on the front line to protect children. When the President took office he published a letter to his daughters, “What I Want for You and Every Child in America.” He spoke about righting wrongs and making America better; wanting his children and others to grow up in a world with no limits on their dreams, with schools worthy of their potential. Violence-free homes were not mentioned. Dreams, schools and discoveries are worth little when a child lives in a nightmare.

Streamlining our Domestic Security Apparatus.  Following the attacks of September 11th, Congress and the president came together and passed the Homeland Security Act, the largest reorganization of government since the end of the Second World War.  This legislation created the largest and most highly dysfunctional agency in our nation's history.  This entity was fasioned in such a knee-jerk and haphazard manner that agencies from across the government were grouped together without considerations for their mission statements.  Karla Romero believes that this is not an efficient way to protect our nation or utilize taxpayer dollars.
                    Interacting Responsibly with the World

Restoring America's Image In The World.  The values we as Americans live and abide by has been key to luring many to our shores for most of our history.  However, allegations over the last decade that our nation has engaged in illegal tactics to extract information from those whom we have captured on the battle field have tarnished the image of our nation.  Karla believes we must and will fight for closing the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay and return that piece of land to the nation in which we have been intruding since the collapse of the Spanish Empire.  This detention center and the blemished image surrounding have made it into a recruiting call for those that despise our nation and wish are people ill will, just as the Alamo and Pearl Harbor had a rallying effect in the struggle for Texan independence and the Second World War.  By closing this facility we can demonstrate our commitment to the international community to be a trustworthy honest broker. Karla Romero does not support NDAA.

Adjust Foreign Aid.  At a time when the United States is facing large budget deficits and persistently high under employment and unemployment, Karla Romero believes we should investing in rebuilding our nation's economic health, not sending our taxpayer dollars overseas to other nations.  Ending foreign aid will save $34 billion over ten years.

Bringing America's Troops Home and Ending Foreign Intervention.  Karla believes that it is wrong to interfere in the affairs of other soverign nations; she believes that our nation's men and women should not be used to police that and bully other counties to do things the way we desire.  To that end, Karla believes we must work to end our military presence overseas in foreign lands.  After eleven years in Afghanistan and nine years in Iraq, we have done all we can in those nations.  Karla will work with her colleagues in Congress to responsibly end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Reducing troops levels in both countries from 60,000 to 30,000 by 2013 will save $86 billion by 2015 and $169 billion by 2030.
